What Are the Password-Protected Files in the Scan Log?

When running a scan with Bitdefender, you may occasionally notice in the scan log that certain files were marked as password-protected and skipped from scan.

Items skipped from scan

In some cases, a similar message may appear during a Bitdefender scan : « The current file is a password-protected item. Please enter the password here below so that Bitdefender can scan it. If you do not know the password, you can choose to skip this file. »

Why Can’t Bitdefender Scan Password-Protected Items?

Bitdefender reports password-protected items during scans because it cannot decrypt or inspect the contents of encrypted archives (like .zip, .rar, or .7z files) without the password, which is normal. These files are harmless. They are often legitimate program archives, software modules, or system files protected by developers to prevent tampering.

Recommended Action

You have the following choices if Bitdefender finds an item that is password-protected during a scan based on whether or not you possess the password:

The current file is a password-protected item. Please enter the password here below so that Bitdefender can scan it. If you do not know the password you can choose to skip this file

  • Enter the password in the corresponding field so the file can be scanned
  • Skip the file during the current scan
  • Skip all password-protected files for that scan session
Most importantly, Bitdefender’s real-time protection continues monitoring the system even after the scan finishes. If encrypted content is later extracted or decrypted, the files are automatically scanned at that time, ensuring ongoing protection for your computer. Password-protected files found during a scan are typically safe to skip and ignore.
If you need to scan the contents of such archives, you may need to contact the product manufacturer for additional details on how the files are structured or how they can be accessed for inspection.
